Fertility Fundamentals: Water as the Source of Life
Water is a vital nutrient. It is essential to life. It’s the actual, literal key to life on earth as we know it. In seeking pregnancy, you are seeking the creation of more life, and getting and staying fully hydrated is the non-negotiable first step of any comprehensive fertility plan.
Water is critical for stable metabolism and healthy liver function, both of which are critical for hormonal balance and proper egg growth.
It’s through your bloodstream that nutrients, oxygen, and hormones — the chemical messengers of the body — are carried to all of your cells. And your blood is 92% water — proving our point that water is fundamental to the distribution of Life itself throughout the living system of your body.
Let’s take it one step further. Follicular fluid — the drop of living water that nourishes and informs the egg (the seed of Life) during its growth and maturation — is what we call an “Essential” fluid. In Chinese medicine we use the word “essence” or “essential” to denote certain fundamental, foundational, somewhat unchanging aspects of the human organism. The condition of our “Essence” represents 1) the inborn potential and current state of our overall vitality and longevity, and 2) that which makes us uniquely ourselves — ie our constitution, our genes, our personal template. Think of follicular fluid as an “essential” fluid — ie a fluid imbued with your creative capacity, bathing the next generation, that egg within your follicle, in the essence of you, at this moment in time — your thoughts, feelings, and all of the ways you’ve nourished yourself (nutritionally, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually) recently and over time. This is your follicular fluid. And follicular fluid is distilled from your blood. And your blood is 92% water.
So drinking enough water is one of the most powerful ways to clarify and amplify your body’s communication with itself, as well as to nourish and infuse your reproductive system with your highest, most creative fertile potential.
Your body can’t store water, so it needs fresh supplies every day. Aim for at least 1/2 your body weight in ounces. Ideally, drink 16oz at multiple intervals, scheduled throughout the day.
Your schedule:
At least 16oz of warm water with lemon on rising in the morning — before consuming anything else
16oz each before breakfast, lunch, and dinner
16oz at 10am, 2pm, and 5pm; set an alarm on your phone, as needed
Your approach:
Take the time you need to drink the full amount at each scheduled time.
Make drinking your water a nourishing ritual. Take a moment in time and stop everything else you’re doing. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Smile. Express your gratitude for the gift of clean, fresh, life-giving water. Take a sip. Feel it in your mouth, feel it travel down your throat, feel it entering your stomach. And from there imagine the water carrying calm, rejuvenating, nourishing, life-affirming energy to every last cell in your body.
