Autumn / Lung Tip #3: Wear a Scarf

We update our wardrobe as the weather cools, pulling out sweaters first, then the scarves, the hats, and the big puffy coats.  We do this to stay warm, but there’s actual protection and prevention in the act of covering up.

Covering the upper back and chest protects the Lung, which is especially susceptible to external influence this time of year — as evidenced by our universal recognition of fall and winter as “cold and flu” season.  If you have any chronic lung issues, a tendency to catch colds or flu easily, or a history of asthma or bronchitis, it’s especially important to keep your chest covered as the weather cools.

You also want to take care to cover the back of your neck.  If you’re without a jacket outside this time of year and the wind blows, what does your body naturally do?  It lifts your shoulders up toward your ears to keep the wind at bay.  This is the body’s innate intelligence attempting to protect the points on the neck that are most susceptible to “cold” and “wind.” Keeping these points warm and covered takes stress off your immune system and leaves it available to work in other ways.

If you do happen to catch a chill, take it seriously and warm up when you get back home.  Take a hot shower or use a blow dryer on the back of your neck for 30-60 seconds until you feel the chill is gone.

And, as always, don’t just take my word for it.  Try it.  Pay attention.  See you feel.  And let me know!
